We love a theme
Tombo has been on my lunch list for a while. It’s a Japanese Poké & Matcha restaurant with a few locations in London. I wanted to check it out because I love Japanese food and matcha. They do loads of matcha drinks – lattes, milkshake, lemonade and matchiato! They also have matcha ice cream, amazing. But when we heard there was a Hello Kitty themed menu, we had to go.
I was probably a little bit more enthusiastic than Cookie. I think she found some of it creepy, whilst I was over-excited and she did say (more than once) “Wow, I didn’t realise you were such a Hello Kitty fan!” My reply was “I don’t know what you mean?” whilst I ate a Hello Kitty bow made of pasta and sipped on a latte with Hello Kitty’s face on it. Who knew I was such a fan. We went to the Fitzrovia Tombo. I ordered a matcha latte – which arrived complete with Hello Kitty latte art, obvs and the salmon poké. Cookie went for the curry but they made it with tofu instead of chicken and we shared the strawberry and cream dorayaki – pancakes with a dreamy creamy filling.
Tombo have done really well with this theme. There’s a big selection of Hello Kitty items on the special menu and even the decor was on point. The food doesn’t just come with a Hello Kitty label, they have really thought about how to incorporate the character into their menu. The latte and dorayaki art was cute enough but the poké and curry comes with a mound of rice which looks exactly like Hello Kitty. The detail was amazing with a pink pasta piece for Hello Kitty’s bow and even the veg in our meals was shaped like the kitten. (Now that I’m writing this down, I’m starting to see why Cookie found it a tad weird!)
In general, we were really impressed with Tombo. The service was great, it was really clean and they don’t usually serve the curry with tofu but they made it especially for Cookie. Most importantly, the food tasted really good. It was quite filling for lunch especially since we ordered the dorayaki but it was worth it! It was like a soft fluffy pancake sandwich with a strawberry and cream filling inside. The matcha latte was a bit too tasty…I don’t think I asked for a skinny one oops. I really want to go back to try out the matcha ice cream. If you want to check out the Hello Kitty menu, you need to be quick as it ends on 22nd October.
